If there was a 30 under 30 list that didn’t only glorify digital marketing for capital gains or whatever, Joe Keery might be somewhere on them for his creative accomplishments. Between his role on Stranger Things, his work with Chicago psych-rock band Post Animal, and his solo project Djo (which he debuted with a full 12-track album last year called Twenty Twenty) he’s kept himself busy. He’s so intent on keeping busy that he couldn’t sit still while touring plans have halted, so he whipped up this ray of sunshine of a song, “Keep Your Head Up.”
A synthy funk track that borrows percussive sounds from the late 80s and a bright falsetto from even further in the past, it’s aptly-timed in its message and overall vibe. What can any of us do at the moment but try to keep our heads up? Maybe even try to put some pep in the step to some sexy sax riffs along the way. Why not?
If you’ve got a question for Keery you can ask it on r/indieheads at 1 PM ET, where he and co-producer/writer Adan Thein will be hanging out. Then later today, he’ll have a chat with The Talkhouse at 3 PM PT / 6 PM ET along with The Flaming Lips’ Wayne Coyne.
This is the first wave in what’s building up to be a full swell of new music from Djo. Stay tuned.
