In their sophomore record Bull in the Shade, Alston-based quartet Beeef proves a consistent capability to deliver an exciting and nuanced listening experience. The solid foundation that was established in their 2017 self-titled debut has been sufficiently built upon, and the result is a record that sees each track washed in its very own charge of electricity.

As a whole, Bull in the Shade embodies an overarching sense of rawness that allows the listener to really lean into the work. The lyrics — some of which are flavored with just a hint of existentialism — present imagery so vivid that it contains a cinematic quality of sorts. “Morning Light” is a particularly strong example of this; the scenes of a particularly turbulent morning play out with ease in the mind’s eye, which only serves to deepen’s the listener’s connection to and investment in the track and the narrative it is revealing. Of course, what must be mentioned is the track’s addictive and effortlessly memorable chorus (who doesn’t love a song with claps in it?), which successfully cements its status as a bona fide earworm. Another lyrical standout is “Little Guys,” a track where the cornerstone message about cheering on the underdog lands with earnestness.

Musically, Beeef’s ability to make each note, chord, and beat feel significant paves way for moments of magic to shine through throughout Bull in the Shade —  and they certainly do. For instance, “Devil’s in the Details” contains a sonic build that sounds like the musical embodiment of working up the courage to take a big chance. “Slide” is permeated with an infectious glimmer that makes it presence known within the track’s first ten seconds. “Charlton Plaza,” a gorgeous instrumental, oozes tranquility with each strum of the acoustic guitar. Each musical nuance — and there are many — is apparent to the ear, making Bull in the Shade a record that is worthy of more than one careful listen.

Bull in the Shade dazzles; it just feels special — it is a work that was clearly crafted with care and meticulous attention to detail. Such an effort paid off, as listeners are treated to a record that allows for endless exploration of lyrical meaning and musical richness.
