New York’s favorite psych-rockers, The Muckers have gifted us with a music video for “This Town Will Drag Us Down”. Emir Mohsseni, singer/guitarist first steps in front of a prom-esque backdrop and instantly starts playing the guitar. The members are all against a distinctive color — guitars on red and yellow hues, bass on blue, and drums on green. This disco escapade feels just as I would imagine the curiosity you get while petting a snake — will it bite back if I caress it a little? This is for me the equivalent to the following question, “Will the streets of New York make you lose your mind?” The answer: as much as you want it to. Mohsseni repeats that he knows you’re worried, he can hear it in your voice. Directed by Idle House, the crew ventures out the streets of New York City, making a parade of stops that takes them to their last destination. Through a peephole, they stand together — they’ve conquered their path and the possibility of the night remains unknown, filled with luxurious and paradoxical reflections of where they are; the fast-paced journey, the laid-back groove of your cigarette break next to a bodega, to the euphoria that comes when you finally arrive to the mysterious party, and you let loose, conquered by haze and the blurriness of the expectation of a good night ahead. Whatever the case, the instructions are imprinted through the bass line and glam that is “This Town Will Drag Us Down” — falling is part of the quest. There are no pretensions or judgement when the town calls on us to be curious and live. This has Tony Manero written all over, and he’s alive and well.
