Thank goddess for The Breeders. In a world full of mass shootings, earthquakes, and a president unable to respond appropriately to any of it, the Deal twins and their Last Splash-era bandmates Josephine Wiggs and Jim Macpherson have released their first single in 8 years. “Wait in the Car” is a swaggering 2 minutes of rock and roll bliss. It all starts with Kim Deal screaming “Good MORNING” to shake you out of your crummy mood. The song is an anthem of determination, of getting shit done despite people’s judgment and desires that you stay placated. “Mother wants to hold me down” Kim Deal intones before continuing “gonna chase the stars, making a map” as lush guitars churn over her words.
After a career full of missteps, it’s good to know The Breeders can still deliver the sonic sugar rush of “Cannonball.” The seesawing “oh oh” hook has been stuck in my head all day. The idiosyncratic phrasing that makes the band so iconic is here as well. Only Kim Deal could coo “meow meow meow meow meow” and make it sound so badass, “Wait in the car! I got business!” she crows, both embodying the oppressive mother figure she introduced and seizing that maternal power for her own agenda.
If the sheer delight of a new song by The Breeders isn’t enough for you, it also comes with news of a TOUR. I’ll say it again. THE THE BREEDERS ARE GOING ON TOUR Y’ALL. “Wait in the Car” is part of a series of 7″ release from the band. The first version will be available on the aforementioned tour.
