Jakob Ogawa, manifests through music as a Mac Demarco-Mild High Club dream child with an 80s kick. Ogawa pairs contemporary indie guitar riffs with 80s beats and swooning vocals. Thus far, we haven’t gotten much from Ogawa. He has been intermittently dropping feel-good singles over the past six months. Earlier tracks like “All Your Love” have accumulated 118k listens on sound cloud, but I’m still impatiently awaiting his June 16 2017 EP Bedroom Tapes

You Might Be Sleeping,” Ogawa’s newest collaboration with Boston’s young and tender, eighteen year old Clairo, bless current fans and new listeners with a funky, bright, yet purely sweet love song. It begins with four barren guitar chords then kicks into overdrive with the drums and bass rounding out the song to support the present vocals. The drum part is barely audible — just enough to bring the track together in a nice package. The lyrics and the melody shine against ambient guitar and a hopping bass line. The pair chirping together on this track sticking to the mind like glue while opening a tender moment of a relationship to the listener. There is a certain softness and ease within their words: “and in the morning, I’ll be here, you might be sleeping without a care” “when I think about you boy my sadness disappears.”
