New music we’ve picked from the trudges of the Internet. This week sees releases from a lot of heavy hitters. Let us know if we’ve missed a gem.
“Gold Years,” the first single from Hot Flash Heat Wave’s just announced sophomore album Soaked, sounds like it was baked in the sun. Moving closer to indie alternative rock and further away from the messy grunge rock of their debut record, “Gold Years” is cleaner and tighter while still brining to mind light leaks and lens flares.
Cende includes members of Porches and LVL UP so it’s not surprising that “Bed” is a track best enjoyed in solitude. The song remains upbeat musically despite lyrically dealing with the aftermath of a breakup. The strained vocals of the chorus have an eerie early 2000’s alt rock reminiscence to them although they manage to veer away from obnoxious.
The artist formerly known as Wu Wu, released “Jewel” last month as the first release as Cowgirl Clue. Arcade pop, synth and auto tune, the track feels like it came from a pop star in the Sailor Moon universe.
Aldous Harding has one of those voices that could probably haunt you for the rest of your life. Her vocals in “Imagining My Man” feel especially big and hollow as if they’re encompassing the multitudes of melancholy, sadness and happiness we’re all capable of.
Pop can sometimes feel like a dirty word when describing music but we’re going to use it here anyways. Nilüfer Yanya is creating the type of music that can only be classified as pop because it’s coming out of the UK, stateside it would be relegated to the depths of indie-alt rock hell. “The Florist” is sparse and quite as it gradually builds itself through the course of three minutes, guided by a booming voice.
The return of Slowdive is nothing short of miraculous. An example the viciousness of the music and press industry and how quickly you can crash, burn and disintegrate, Slowdive is back with “Sugar for the Pill.” The single has very little to no traces of the fuzzy, scuzzy, shoegaze that the band is associated with and also helped create.
