Truth be told, I went into this video expecting to be bored by it. The majority of what is pitched to me are indie DIY projects, and if I am honest, a lot of them have similar sounds and similar aesthetics. There is a lot of creativity that goes into this genre however, much like in any other genre of music, pop being the biggest culprit, there can become a defining sound that is emulated ad nauseam. That being said, I am often surprised and usually impressed by the little differences between releases. Caroline and Claude’s “Stir The Pot” is one such example.

What a fun and funny video! Even without the video, the single itself is hilarious. Admit it, everyone likes to play the bad guy. That bitchy, petty character is attractive for a reason, and though of course taking it too far and falling too much in love with the character never leads to anything good, we are attracted anyway. It is that enjoyment that fuels “Stir The Pot”, a single in which Caroline and Claude (real names Hannah and Dylan) embody the meanness of those characters which are in their own words so far from their real personalities. The video itself is adorable, I am forever impressed by the creativity some of these lockdown videos have. But it is really the clear enjoyment Caroline and Claude brought to its creation that kept me watching and smiling the entire time. I think what I like best about this particular track is that Caroline and Claude took a risk at writing a song that is not necessarily personal. They play a character that interested them and had fun with it. Not everything has to be touching and revealing and heart wrenching. Sometimes it’s ok to just let loose with the sort of joyful imagination that makes us love art as children. It’s ok to not take ourselves so seriously sometimes.
