King Woman, aka Kris Esfandiari, returns with a grimly elated video for “Morning Star” as a taste for what’s to come on their sophomore album Celestial Blues coming this July 30 via Relapse Records.
The video itself is simple enough, with King Woman in an abandoned warehouse done up in messy, greasy, almost-clown makeup and smoking a cigarette whose smoke catches the small amount of light leaking in the space as it swirls around them. Their distinct mix of metal meets shoegaze rumbles in the forefront as King Woman slithers around in the darkness, later to reveal two deep gashes where wings used to be once they shed their coat and reveal their bare skin. Directed by Muted Windows and shot in one take, it’s sweeping, nightmarish, and effective.
