As we start to re-emerge into some form of social life with vaccinations, decent weather, and the promise of live shows on the horizon, the idea of spotting a captivating stranger in public has never felt more romanticized. Dayglow leans fully into this missed connections-style infatuation at first sight on “Balcony”.
Dayglow aka Sloan Stuble gives us a sensory rundown of when this missed connection occurred which leads a listener to believe it was a “spotted you at the gig” scenario noting “the smell of wine” and “I feel half deaf”. Also, where else are we encountering balconies in our every day life if not at a gig? Drawing inspiration from bands like Broncho and The Cure and throwing in some Mario Kart influence for good measure, the track bounces along happily to an ultra-catchy, synthy-pop beat, despite Stuble being somewhat in distress over the entire situation. This distress is caused by nothing coming from this meaningful almost-interaction. Stuble sings, “I wish you would have come down, talked to me,” repeatedly as he relives the vivid experience in retrospect. And while I would never wish distress on anyone, the fact that just spotting this person from across the room has put Stuble in a full-on spiral he wishes he could rewind and never make happen is somewhat endearing. After having a year and half to think back on all our past decisions, and indecisions, the song, which has been in the works for some time, definitely has a new life and context.
This track is the most recent off Dayglow’s forthcoming record Harmony House out May 21st. The project will also be touring North American and Europe starting in the fall with dates already selling out. For more information and updates, keep up with Dayglow on Instagram.
