We’ve all been doing a lot of masturbating lately. Certainly the rise of OnlyFans is proof of that. Masturbating on camera, masturbating in front of a laptop screen, FaceTiming with the guy who you don’t want to invite over yet because he may or may not have Coronavirus. If you’re hooking up these days, it’s someone you already know or someone you met on Hinge because we certainly aren’t meeting new people at the bar anymore. But thank goodness for good ol’ masturbation because isn’t that always the most reliable way?

Donna Missal‘s “Sex is good (but have you tried)” is an ode to masturbation and self love for the pandemic era, but it is also a somewhat perfect lead up to the end of said era as well. Horniness absolutely bleeds through the power ballad, pop style single and nineties inspired indie footage of the accompanying video feels like something that your crush might send you. Donna Missal is no stranger to ear-worm worthy music and this is no exception but like many of this era’s female musicians her voice is powerful and raw enough that she might be equally at home singing an aria.

Of the new track, Missal shares, “‘sex is good (but have you tried)’ is what came out of me in quarantine life, the product of my bedroom being my environment and everything around me becoming so small and intimate, and such a reflection of this internet-centric thing going on in music. It’s so different for me because i’ve always been like a performer-singer and this is definitely my first time working from a different place than I previously was, both physically and mentally.”

Such a change in environment and circumstance has worked a positive evolution on Missal. Her voice is confident and the single is strong enough to stand on its own in terms of style and subject. It feels like a peak into the inner confines of Missal’s head, a personal selfie sent to us in the midst of quarantine. But this single isn’t just for us, it’s for Missal herself. She doesn’t need our approval, but she is willing to share.
