Earlier this month, LA-Based rock band Spare Parts for Broken Hearts released their newest track and second single of the year, “Dirty Milk.” The record kicks off with a brief moment of cacophonous amplifier feedback , commanding the audience’s attention and telling us to “wake up.” Then, it throws us deeper into the sonically confrontational world front-person Sarah Green has created for us, complete with a chugging bass and grunge-era guitar distortion. “Dirty Milk” paints a gripping picture of abandonment and feeling lost in a world where no one sees you. Looking at the toppled and presumably old and “dirty” Milk Carton included on the album art, we can see that the narrator has been lost for a while, and is grappling with the desire for someone, anyone, who can empathize. Unsatisfied and disheartened with life, the narrator questions and rejects the world. This sentiment feels particularly relevant considering our current political and societal climate, where, frankly, even the American zeitgeist of 5 years ago seems like a distant and treasured memory. It’s times like these that call for action and for unity, for people to step back and examine the realities around us, and “Dirty Milk” acts as a moving catalyst to that end.
