ICYMI is a series featuring new and notable releases you (and we) may have missed

Porridge Radio – “7 Seconds”

I’m going to make a bold statement that this is genuinely one of the best songs I’ve ever heard. Musically, it has a nostalgic vibe with 80s-esque synths embellishing the track, but that effervescent lightness is offset by the strength and grounded quality behind singer Dana Margolin’s vocals and her heart-wrenching lyrics. It articulates the profoundly universal experience of feeling like you’re drowning, drunk on someone else, in a way that feels unique to the listener. That, to me, is the mark of an exceptional songwriter. It’s not overdone. It’s perfect in it’s structure and simplicity. I love this song. If you listen to anything we ever put on this site, listen to this.

Mamalarky – “Schism Trek”

Mamalarky asks the question we should probably have all asked ourselves at one point in time — “How is it fair to love someone who’s never really there?” “Schism Trek” is all about self-acceptance and self-love, which, during this period of weird isolation, is more important than ever. They don’t shove this idea down your throat, though. It’s embedded in their collage of synths, clashing cymbals, and syncopated rhythms.

Sunflower Bean – “Moment in the Sun”

The New York band has traded in their cityscapes for the country on “Moment in the Sun”. This is a softer, poppier side of Sunflower Bean than we saw most recently on King of the Dudes, and while I stand by that EP, this is a welcome change. The strength of Julia Cumming’s vocals are really highlighted here — the grit behind her calls, contrasting with breathier coos. The video is beautifully shot as well — a sort of technicolor soaked, overgrown country estate captured by Andy DeLuca & Sarah Eiseman.

Baird – “Beluga Baby”

Whether you’re cruising down the highway or drinking beers on your balcony (ahem-fire escape), Baird’s “Beluga Baby” is the perfect track to float away to and leave all the bullshit behind. It’s Bossa Nova meets stripped back indie pop with a bit of a throwback nostalgia thrown in. So if you’re holding on to summer for just a little longer, this one’s for you.
