In their new video “EGG”, LA based punk band Niis does an excellent job depicting the mental state that we’re all descending into in this ongoing quarantine. I have no trouble believing that by the end of all of this we will be imagining that we see our doppelgängers writing on the television and cooking dirty socks for dinner in our desperation. Turns out when our wish to just be left alone is granted, it’s not nearly as fun as we thought. Who knew.
Is there anything more punk than creating a music video that is essentially just a composite of selfies taken alone in your apartment, set to a track about wanting to be alone in your apartment? On that note, digging through the trash and then throwing your findings into a frying pan is also pretty punk. I mean, what a “Fuck You” to rock star glamour.
Front woman Mimi SanDoe screams that she “just wants to date myself” as her band mate Monte Najera sits alone at a tiny kitchen table across from a projection of himself. Both of their faces reflect a sort of grim acceptance and disappointment that comes with realizing there is only so much of themselves that they can take. It’s a relatable sentiment. I’m pretty over myself too. Wonder where I can find myself some dirty socks to cook up.
