Nostalgia’s cycle is typically about 20 years. In the early ’90s growing up, bell-bottoms were it and everyone dressed up as cleaned up hippies in starkly tie-dyed tees and faux suede fringe for Halloween to remember the ’70s. Historically speaking that’s just about how long we as humans need to come around to something with enough distance to let good parts leak back in.
Listening to Modern Vices is like remembering the good little bits of songs you and everyone else spent all your money to fly and see at festivals when indie-rock was turning into something else in the early aughts. It’s because of this that it feels a little bit disorienting in a way that makes you want to hear more. Only a decade has passed instead of the usual two, and we’re still in that strange place of “too close, but too far,” before it turns to just “too far.” Their most recent LP, If Only, is song after song of vocals that pull your empathy out like taffy with the tone alone and cleverly perched and widely sourced instrumentation.
Check out some polaroids shot at their recent show at The Broadway and get to know the band a little better with a few of their favorite things.
Pick-Up Basketball
You never know what you’re in for. You could be playing with a bunch a dads, a high school prodigy, or maybe just by yourself. Pick up is a beautiful game of mixed skill level that finds its way through the love of basketball.
Can
One of the first burned CDs we wore out in the van and a go to when driving through the night. Are you waiting for the streetcar…
Napoleon Dynamite:
The first “funniest thing I’ve ever seen” and (after a brief wave of middle school edginess) still the funniest thing I’ve ever seen. Realizing it was intentional was a gamechanger. Endless re-watch value. Honestly what shaped my sense of humor/personality. What else can be said.
Tim and Eric:
Napoleon walked so Tim and Eric could run. The most twisted blend of sketches, mocumentaries, advertisements, and just plain insanity, this duo have provided endless quotes that have kept us laughing for days on end in the van. I encourage you to dispel any association you have of them being stoner humor because it’s simply not (entirely) true.
Kombucha:
I like it because I have a messed up stomach and it sometimes feels like the only solution
Chipotle:
Our favorite after practice hangout spot.
Beans:
They are cheap and delicious and I eat them almost every day. High in protein and fiber what else more is there to say…
Dark Souls:
Praise the sun
Darkplace:
We love our British humor and this was one of the first shows we all watched and quoted together
The NBA:
Nothing quite like kicking back, relaxing, and watching my Chicago Bulls lose another game.
A good steering wheel that doesn’t fly off while you’re driving
